Ransomware is a program that locks your files and demands payment. Small businesses are targeted because they are often less prepared.
How it gets in
Most attacks start in a few ways.
- A staff member opens a malicious email attachment or link
- Software that has not been updated
- Weak or reused passwords on remote access
- A device without any protection software
Reduce the risk
Keep software updated, use protection software on every device, turn on two factor sign in, and train staff to spot suspicious messages. Offline backups matter most.
If it happens
Disconnect the affected devices from the network, do not pay in a hurry, and contact your IT support and, where personal information is involved, take advice about reporting. A tested backup is the best way out.
