Backups are only useful if they are recent, stored away from the site and proven to restore. Most owners find that out only when something breaks.
Match the schedule to the change
A brochure site that changes twice a year needs a backup after each change. A shop or booking site that takes orders every day needs one daily, and sometimes more often.
Keep copies in separate places
A backup on the same server as the site disappears with it.
- Keep at least one copy off the hosting account
- Keep several dates, not only the latest
- Include the database and uploaded files
- Protect the copies with a password
Test the restore
Once or twice a year, restore a backup to a test address and open it. If you cannot restore it, you do not have a backup.
