Cloud costs rarely explode in one go. They creep up through forgotten test servers and oversized machines, and a few habits catch them early.
See the spend
Set a monthly budget and an alert at fifty and at eighty percent of it. Look at the bill weekly in the first months, not only when it arrives.
Stop paying for idle things
Common sources of waste are easy to find.
- Test servers nobody switched off
- Machines larger than the work needs
- Old backups and snapshots kept forever
- Storage that nobody reads
Label everything
Tag each resource with the project and the owner. When the bill jumps you can see which project caused it and who to ask.
